Chapter Thirty-Two
They set out just after sunset two evenings later.
The city was hauntingly quiet after the loud celebration that had lasted long into the morning, and Drystan wasn't sure he liked it. But now, on the evening of their departure, there were more things to think about than the quiet.
Mhaedin's forces were divided into three groups. The first group was made up of the ground forces, which consisted of Centaurs, Giants, Will-oâ-the-Wisps, Fauns, Fenris, their lone Elf, and any other lone Atharrachs who couldn't fly. The Dragons, Fae, Phoenixes, Sphinxes, Griffins, Pegasi, Rocs, and other flying creatures were to travel overhead. And the few who couldn't fly but were pertinent to their mission, such as the Seers and the Nymphs, were to ride on the backs of appointed creatures, sometimes flying, other times riding along the ground, depending on the wind.
âHas anyone seen Eirin?â Drystan asked as he made his way through the crowd of flyers. The travelers were standing on one of the cliffs overlooking the ground forces, who were organizing themselves in the foothills.
âWhy aren't you in Dragon form?â Callispa asked as she landed beside him. Her eyes and wings were alight with flame, and her cheeks were pink with excitement.
âI'm trying to find Eirin.â
Callispa blinked at him. âWhy?â
âShe's riding with me.â
Callispa shook her head. âI'm riding with you. Eirin's riding with Karolus.â
When had that been decided? âWhere is he?â Drystan asked.
Callispa pointed, but her lips stayed pursed. âOver there. He's in a mood, though, just so you know.â
Drystan stomped over to where Karolus stood, barking orders. âWhy isn't Eirin with me?â
Karolus didn't even look up from the parchment he was scrolling. âI wasn't aware that you'd perfectly mastered your Dragon abilities yet,â he said in a flat voice. âForgive me for overlooking such a thing to celebrate.â
Eirin was standing beside him, looking none too pleased herself.
Drystan tried again. âBut Iââ
âYou still struggle with your powers during practice.â Karolus finally looked at him, his eyes an icy blue. âWhat makes you think you'll be able to protect her during outright battle?â
Drystan glared at him but couldn't find an immediate reply. As much as he hated to admit it, Karolus was right. He still hadn't mastered his abilities completely. Not even close. While his shifts were faster and less painful these days, and his flying had greatly improved, he still felt as though his two natures were at war within him more often than not, the monster fighting with the man.
He also was all too familiar with the threats Eirin would face once they left the safety of the mountain city. Hector had made that quite clear to them several days before.
âAside from every miscreant and desperate soul wishing to claim you as his own, you'll face the dangers of the elements,â Hector had said. âWhen the original curse fell, in addition to what it did to the sun, it released an ash that literally fell over everyone and everything in the world. The water, the soil, the trees, the food, even the roots are toxic.
